Member with designatory letters

Individuals working in the science, engineering or technology industry can apply to become a Member with designatory letters TMIET or MIET.

To join the IET as a Member with designatory letters you must have achieved a standard of knowledge and understanding and be engaged in an activity relevant to the science, engineering or technology community.

The IET awards two categories of Member with designatory letters:

  • TMIET (Technician Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology) which can be adopted by professional technicians;
  • MIET (Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology) which can be adopted by professional engineers.

Existing members of the IET can apply to transfer or upgrade membership category to gain designatory letters provided they have sufficient skills or experience.

View the requirements for TMIET and MIET.

Whilst your membership application is being assessed, you will be able to access the advantages of membership however; you will only be entitled to use the appropriate designatory letters after your name once your application has been approved. The IET will contact you once your application has been approved and you can begin using designatory letters.

For best practice on how to display designatory letters, please refer to our use of designatory letters guide.

Please note: It is IET policy to use the term designatory letters rather than post-nominals when referring to the letters after your name.
